The viscosity is essentially the resistance of the oil. A viscometer is used to measure the flow of the liquid. If a liquid has a high viscosity, then that means it will not flow as fast. There are a few numbers that you will need to understand in order to know how viscous your oil is. You will see the letter W on the oil bottle and a number will be right beside it. This number represents the viscosity when the oil is at a low temperature. There is another number that represents the viscosity at a high temperature.

You do not want to buy oil without knowing the type that your engine needs. Oil that doesn't have the right viscosity can damage the engine. You can find information about the viscosity of the oil inside of the vehicle owner's manual.
